The Dacians were an ancient Indo-European people who inhabited areas around the Carpathian Mountains and lower Danube, including much of present-day Romania. Closely related to the Getae and generally associated with the wider Thracian cultural sphere, they formed powerful kingdoms under rulers including Burebista and Decebalus. Rome defeated Decebalus in the Dacian Wars of 101 to 102 and 105 to 106 CE, annexing part of the territory as the province of Dacia and commemorating the campaigns on Trajan's Column.
