The Khwarazmian Empire was a medieval Muslim state ruled by the Anushtegin dynasty from Khwarazm, an oasis region south of the Aral Sea. During the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries it expanded across much of Central Asia, Iran, and Afghanistan, controlling important cities and trade routes formerly held by Seljuk and Ghurid powers. Conflict with Genghis Khan triggered the Mongol invasion beginning in 1219, which shattered the empire, although its last ruler, Jalal al-Din, continued resisting until 1231.
