description Dacians Overview
The Sarmatians were a confederation of ancient Iranian-speaking peoples who dominated parts of the Eurasian steppe from about the fifth century BCE to the fourth century CE. They were related to the Scythians and moved westward from the steppe into the Pontic-Caspian region, where their groups included the Roxolani, Iazyges, and Alans. Sarmatian warfare combined mounted archery with armored cavalry and long lances. Roman sources record both conflict with Sarmatian groups and their service as allied or auxiliary troops.
