description Pyu City-States Overview
The Pyu city-states were a group of early urban centers in the Irrawaddy basin of present-day Myanmar. The best-known sites are Halin, Beikthano, and Sri Ksetra, whose remains date from roughly the second century BCE to the ninth century CE. Their archaeological evidence includes brick walls, moats, palace areas, Buddhist stupas, burial grounds, craft sites, and organized water-management works. The cities document an early form of Buddhist urbanism in mainland Southeast Asia and show evidence of agriculture, long-distance trade, and cultural exchange.
