DB Class 111

The DB Class 111 was introduced in 1974 for Deutsche Bundesbahn, with a total of 227 units built. They were manufactured primarily by a consortium including Henschel, Krauss-Maffei, Siemens, and AEG to replace older electric locomotives on West Germany's electrified network.

The Class 111 was used for both express and regional passenger services across Deutsche Bundesbahn's electrified network. Its top speed of 160 km/h made it suitable for InterCity and later S-Bahn commuter duties, and many units spent their later careers on suburban services around cities like Munich and Frankfurt.

While most Class 111s have been retired or reassigned to secondary duties, some remained in service with Deutsche Bahn into the 2020s, particularly on regional and S-Bahn routes. Several units have also been preserved by railway museums and heritage operators in Germany.

The Class 111 was developed as a successor to the earlier Class 110 (E 10), featuring a similar Co'Co' wheel arrangement but with an updated Universal drive system and improved electrical equipment. The 111's modernized components allowed for better reliability and slightly higher performance on passenger duties.
