ICE 2

Introduced by Deutsche Bahn in 1996, the ICE 2 was designed to be more flexible than the older ICE 1 by using a half-set configuration. Each ICE 2 consists of one power car, six intermediate coaches, and a driving trailer, allowing two half-sets to be coupled together for longer routes. This allowed the train to split en route to serve different destinations.

The ICE 2 is operated exclusively by Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway company. It serves domestic high-speed routes across the country, connecting major hubs like Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt. It operates on the regular German electrified network.

The ICE 2 has a maximum commercial operating speed of 280 kilometers per hour, which is roughly 174 miles per hour. This high speed allows Deutsche Bahn to offer rapid transit between major German cities. The trainset's aerodynamic driving trailer helps maintain stability at these speeds.

A single ICE 2 half-set is designed to carry roughly 300 to 400 passengers, depending on the specific interior layout. When two half-sets are coupled together to form a full train, the total capacity easily exceeds 700 passengers. This modular design is highly efficient for managing varying passenger loads.
