Denakil Desert

Located in the Afar Triangle of northeastern Ethiopia, the depression sits in a geological rift significantly below sea level. This low-lying geography traps intense heat, resulting in year-round extreme temperatures that regularly exceed 50 degrees Celsius.

The landscape is defined by intense geothermal activity, including sulfur springs, acid pools, and active volcanoes like Erta Ale. It also features vast salt flats, which are remnants of ancient evaporated seas.

Traveling to the Danakil Desert requires careful planning and typically mandates hiring armed escorts due to the presence of rebel groups near the Eritrean border. While tourist expeditions do occur, geopolitical instability makes the area risky.

The indigenous Afar people have historically survived by extracting salt from the desert's massive salt flats. They cut the salt into large blocks and transport it via camel caravans to the Ethiopian highlands to be traded.
