Desert Whitetail

The Desert Whitetail is an endemic species primarily found in the American Southwest, thriving in arid regions where water is scarce. You can spot them in states like Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Texas.

This dragonfly species has adapted specifically to survive in arid environments by relying on temporary, or ephemeral, desert streams and pools. They have a rapid life cycle that allows them to mature and reproduce before these temporary water sources dry up completely.

Like other dragonflies in the Plathemis genus, the Desert Whitetail features distinct broad dark bands on its otherwise pale wings, though its body coloration tends to blend in with the dusty desert environment. Males typically develop a chalky white pruinescence on their abdomen as they mature.

Adult Desert Whitetails are active predators that hunt soft-bodied flying insects like mosquitoes, flies, and gnats near their desert water sources. Their aquatic nymphs live in the ephemeral streams and actively prey on small aquatic invertebrates and tadpoles.
