Illinois River Cruiser

The Illinois River Cruiser is a large dragonfly known for its continuous, rapid flight patterns, which make it relatively easy to observe but difficult to catch. Unlike some species that frequently perch, these dragonflies spend most of their active hours patrolling the air over water.

As their name suggests, these dragonflies are typically found flying continuously over large rivers and wide streams. They are native to eastern North America and favor clean, fast-moving aquatic habitats.

They are part of the Cruiser family, characterized by large eyes that meet on the top of the head and a single pale stripe on the side of their dark thorax. Their rapid, sweeping flight low over the water is also a major identifying behavior.

The Illinois River Cruiser can be found across a large portion of eastern North America, ranging from the Great Lakes region down into parts of the southern United States. They are particularly common along the extensive river systems in the Midwest.
