Devnimori Stupa

The ancient Buddhist stupa is located in Gujarat, India, within the historical borders of the Gupta Empire. It dates back to the 4th century CE and was once a highly significant religious site. Today, the archaeological site is submerged underwater due to a modern reservoir project.

The archaeological site was excavated in the early 1960s before the area was deliberately flooded by a modern reservoir. Archaeologists raced against time to recover significant religious relics during this brief window. The findings provided deep insight into the Buddhist practices of the Gupta period.

The site yielded significant Buddhist religious relics, including a silver casket containing bodily relics of the Buddha. These findings validated the historical importance of the site during the 4th century CE. The artifacts helped trace the spread of Buddhism throughout the Gujarat region.

The ancient site is now permanently underwater because it was submerged by a modern irrigation reservoir. Following the salvage excavations in the early 1960s, the government proceeded with damming the local river. Researchers can now only study the site through the detailed reports published after the rescue dig.
