description DigitalOcean Droplets (Static IP) Overview

DigitalOcean provides straightforward static IPs for its VPS instances (Droplets). It is highly favored by independent developers and startups due to its clean UI and predictable pricing. When you create a Droplet, you can reserve a reserved IP that remains constant even if the server is destroyed and recreated. This makes it an excellent choice for staging environments and small-scale production web servers.

help DigitalOcean Droplets (Static IP) FAQ

What is a DigitalOcean Reserved IP for a Droplet?

A Reserved IP is a static public IP address that belongs to your DigitalOcean account instead of being permanently tied to one Droplet. You can reassign it to another Droplet in the same datacenter region when you replace or rebuild a server.

How is a Reserved IP different from the normal Droplet IP?

A normal Droplet public IP is assigned to that Droplet and changes when the Droplet is destroyed. A Reserved IP is designed to survive that replacement so DNS records can keep pointing at the same address.

Can a DigitalOcean Reserved IP move between regions?

No, Reserved IPs are region-bound. An IP reserved in NYC3 cannot simply be moved to a Droplet in SFO3 or AMS3.

Why would a developer use a Reserved IP with a load balancer or web app?

It gives the app a stable address for DNS A records, firewall allowlists, and external integrations. For a small VPS setup, that can make blue-green replacement easier because the IP can be reassigned instead of waiting on DNS propagation.
