description Diu Fort Overview
Diu Fort is a Portuguese coastal fortress on the eastern end of Diu Island, off the coast of Gujarat, India. The Portuguese began constructing the present fort in 1535 under an agreement with Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat, after the political and military conflicts surrounding the defence of Diu. Its walls, bastions, moat, and seaward position protected the harbor, and Portugal retained Diu until its incorporation into India in 1961.
