Donald Winnicott

Winnicott argued that healthy development does not require perfect parenting. A caregiver initially responds closely to the infant and then allows manageable frustrations as the child becomes better able to tolerate reality.

A transitional object is a comforting possession, such as a blanket or soft toy, that helps a child negotiate separation from a caregiver. Winnicott introduced the concept in his 1953 paper on transitional objects and transitional phenomena.

The holding environment is the reliable physical and emotional care that makes an infant feel safe enough to develop. Winnicott extended the idea beyond literal holding to include the caregiver's broader pattern of protection, responsiveness, and continuity.

He was both a British pediatrician and a psychoanalyst. His clinical work with children and families helped shape concepts such as the true self, false self, and the importance of play.
