Despite focusing on events near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, the movie was actually filmed far away in the city of Kryvyi Rih. The production crew transformed locations in Kryvyi Rih to stand in for the war-torn Donbass region. This was necessary due to the extreme danger of filming in the actual conflict zone.

The film garnered several prestigious international awards following its release on the festival circuit. Most notably, it won the Un Certain Regard prize for best director at the Cannes Film Festival. It also took home the Golden Peacock award at the International Film Festival of India.
