Dorocordulia libera

Dorocordulia libera is highly specific in its habitat choice, primarily breeding in acidic bog ponds and quiet, still waters. You will typically find this North American emerald dragonfly patrolling the margins of sphagnum bogs and marshy woodland pools. They rely heavily on these undisturbed, vegetated aquatic environments to lay their eggs.

This distinct species of emerald dragonfly was officially described by entomologists in the year 1871. It belongs to the Corduliidae family, commonly known as the emerald dragonflies. The classification helped researchers better understand the vast diversity of North American Odonata in the late 19th century.

Dorocordulia libera is native to North America and is typically found in regions that support its required acidic bog habitats. Their range is highly localized, generally concentrated in northeastern and upper midwestern states where glacial lakes and peat bogs are common. They are rarely spotted outside of these specific wetland ecosystems.

Like other emerald dragonflies, Dorocordulia libera relies on still, acidic bog ponds to complete its life cycle. The females deposit their eggs directly into the water or onto aquatic vegetation in these marshy environments. The resulting aquatic nymphs then use the dense vegetation of the still waters for cover while they hunt before emerging as adults.
