description Down Cathedral Overview
Down Cathedral is a Church of Ireland cathedral in Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland. The present building incorporates parts of a medieval monastery founded on the Hill of Down, including fabric dating to 1183, and it was restored after falling into decay following the dissolution of the monasteries. A royal charter established a cathedral chapter in 1609, while later restoration supplied features such as the box pews and pipe organ. The churchyard contains the traditional grave site of Saint Patrick and remains a place of worship and pilgrimage.
