It bears opposite leaves, square stems, and clusters of blue to violet, two-lipped flowers, while fine hairs on the stems and leaves account for the common name. The plant usually occurs in open woods, woodland edges, and rocky slopes, and its flowers provide nectar for bees and other visiting insects.
