Tall Bellflower

Tall bellflower (Campanula americana) can reach about six feet in height under favorable growing conditions, making it one of the taller species in the Campanula genus. Its erect stem bears pale blue to violet, star-shaped flowers arranged along a central spike. This height makes it a striking presence in woodland gardens and shaded borders.

Campanula americana can behave as either an annual or a biennial depending on growing conditions and climate. In its native eastern North American range, it commonly grows as a winter annual or biennial, germinating in one season and flowering in the next. This life cycle is somewhat unusual within Campanula, a genus dominated by perennials.

Tall bellflower is native to eastern North America, where it is found in moist woodlands, shaded slopes, stream margins, and disturbed habitats. Its range extends across much of the eastern United States. It thrives in partially shaded environments with adequate soil moisture.
