description Engelszell Abbey Overview
Engelszell Abbey, located in Engelhartszell an der Donau in Upper Austria, is the only Trappist monastery in the country. The monastery was originally founded as a Cistercian abbey in 1293 but was dissolved and later re-established in 1925 by Trappist monks who had been expelled from their previous abbey in France. Today, the monastic community sustains itself through the production of Trappist beer and various liqueurs, which they began brewing in 2012. The abbey's striking Gothic and Baroque architecture, alongside its brewery, attracts both religious pilgrims and visitors interested in monastic traditions.
