Eric Wolf

Published in 1982, the book examines how non-Western societies were not isolated or timeless but were actively drawn into expanding global capitalist networks through European colonialism. Wolf challenged the anthropological tendency to treat Indigenous peoples as existing outside of history, arguing instead that their cultures were profoundly shaped by world-systemic forces.

Wolf integrated Marxist political economy and world-systems theory into cultural anthropology, helping bridge the gap between these fields. His approach challenged conventional functionalist anthropology by insisting that local cultures could not be understood without analyzing their position within global structures of power and exploitation.

Wolf conducted fieldwork in Europe and Latin America, with notable research on peasant communities in the Italian Alps and in Mexico. His study of rural communities informed his broader theoretical work on the political economy of agrarian societies.

Wolf was born in Vienna in 1923 and fled to the United States as a teenager to escape the Nazi annexation of Austria. He became one of the most influential anthropologists in American academia, teaching at institutions including the University of Michigan and the City University of New York.
