description Eurostar Class 373 Overview

The British Rail Class 373, known alternatively as the TGV TMST, is a fleet of high-speed trains purpose-built for international rail services through the Channel Tunnel. Constructed by GEC-Alsthom in France, the trains entered service in 1994 to operate routes connecting London with Paris and Brussels. The Class 373 was engineered to operate across three different railway electrification systems used in the UK, France, and Belgium. The fleet is based on the French TGV platform but features a narrower body profile to conform to the smaller British loading gauge.

help Eurostar Class 373 FAQ

Why is the Eurostar Class 373 also called the TGV TMST?

The train was derived from French TGV technology, while TMST stands for TransManche Super Train. GEC-Alsthom led the consortium that built it for Channel Tunnel services beginning in 1994.

Why were Class 373 trains built with several electrical systems?

London, Paris, and Brussels historically used different railway electrification and signalling systems. The Class 373's tri-voltage equipment allowed one train to cross those networks without changing locomotives.

How does the Class 373 meet Channel Tunnel safety requirements?

A Class 373 set consists of two articulated half-sets joined together for normal operation. The arrangement was designed so a viable section could be separated during an emergency, while the powered end cars provided redundancy.

Did the Class 374 completely replace the Eurostar Class 373?

No. Siemens Class 374 e320 trains expanded and modernized Eurostar's fleet, but refurbished Class 373 e300 sets continued to operate alongside them on core routes.
