help Fly Geyser FAQ

How exactly was Fly Geyser in Nevada created?

Fly Geyser is a man-made geothermal feature that was accidentally created in 1964. It formed after a geothermal energy company drilled a test well and failed to properly cap it, allowing hot water to continuously erupt and deposit minerals.

Why does Fly Geyser feature such bright green and red colors?

The striking multi-colored terraces are caused by thermophilic (heat-loving) algae that thrive in the hot mineral water. The algae bloom in vibrant greens and reds, contrasting sharply with the stark desert landscape of the Black Rock Desert.

Can you freely drive up and visit Fly Geyser?

No, Fly Geyser is located on the private, gated Fly Ranch property and is not accessible via a standard public road. However, the Burning Man Project, which purchased the ranch in 2016, offers limited guided nature walks to the geyser by reservation.

How large is the Fly Geyser formation today?

The central cone of the geyser is currently around 5 to 6 feet tall, but the sprawling terrace system extends much wider. Because the water continuously deposits calcium carbonate and silica, the geyser's size is slowly increasing year by year.
