Folkert Belzer

description Folkert Belzer Overview

Folkert O. Belzer (1930-1995) was an American transplant surgeon whose research focused on preserving organs outside the body. His team developed the University of Wisconsin preservation solution, commonly called UW solution, for cold storage of organs awaiting transplantation. By extending useful preservation times for organs such as the liver, kidney, and pancreas, the solution improved transportation and scheduling options for transplant programs and became widely used in clinical practice.

insights Ranking position

Folkert Belzer ranks #43 of 342 in the Surgeon ranking, behind Harold Gillies, ahead of Donald Ross.

help Folkert Belzer FAQ

What is University of Wisconsin solution used for?

UW solution is a cold preservation fluid used to protect donor organs between procurement and transplantation. Its formulation limits cell swelling, metabolic damage, and other injuries that develop while an organ is stored without normal blood flow.

Who developed UW organ preservation solution with Folkert Belzer?

Belzer developed the solution with biochemist James Southard and a University of Wisconsin research team. It entered clinical use in the late 1980s and was also marketed under the name ViaSpan.

How did Belzer's solution change transplant logistics?

Longer, more reliable cold preservation gave transplant teams more time to transport organs, match recipients, and prepare operating rooms. This was especially important for abdominal organs such as the liver and pancreas, which had previously imposed severe scheduling limits.

Was UW solution Folkert Belzer's only contribution to organ preservation?

No. Belzer had previously worked on machine perfusion, in which a preservation fluid is circulated through an organ outside the body. His later cold-storage solution offered a simpler approach that could support multi-organ procurement and transport.
