description Fort Point Overview
Fort Point is a historic United States Army masonry fortification located at the southern side of the Golden Gate strait in San Francisco, California. Completed in 1861, it was built to defend the bay against naval attack and remains the only complete Third System fortification on the American West Coast. The structure is uniquely situated directly beneath the southern approach to the Golden Gate Bridge and is now preserved as a national historic site.
