description Gabriela Silang Overview
Gabriela Silang (1731-1763) was a Filipino revolutionary leader who became one of the first women to lead a movement for independence from Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines. After her husband Diego Silang was assassinated in 1763, she assumed command of the Ilocano revolt he had started in the northern Philippines. She led approximately 2,000 fighters against Spanish forces for several months before being captured and publicly hanged in Vigan on September 20, 1763. Today, she is remembered as a national heroine in the Philippines, and her name has been adopted by various women's organizations advocating for social justice.
