Galena Historic District

The Galena Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, recognizing its exceptional concentration of preserved 19th-century architecture. It remains one of the most significant historic districts in Illinois, encompassing hundreds of contributing structures along the Galena River.

Ulysses S. Grant lived in Galena before the Civil War, working in his father's leather goods store on Main Street. The Galena Historic District includes the Ulysses S. Grant Home, which was gifted to the general by Galena citizens in 1865 and is now preserved as an Illinois state historic site open to visitors.

The district showcases well-preserved examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture, reflecting Galena's boom period as a lead-mining and Mississippi River trade hub in the mid-1800s.
