Glasford

description Glasford Overview

Glasford is a probable buried meteorite impact structure near Glasford in Peoria County, Illinois. Geological drilling and gravity surveys identified a roughly circular dome about 4 kilometres across, underlain by intensely shattered breccia and overlain by Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The structure is associated with the Late Ordovician Maquoketa Group, and shatter cones found in drill cores strengthen the interpretation that the brecciation was caused by impact rather than ordinary tectonic deformation. It is relevant to geologists studying buried impact structures and the Ordovician impact record.
