Glowing puffleg

The Glowing puffleg is an Eriocnemis hummingbird most notable for its vibrant purple throat patch and dense, white leg puffs that look like little boots. It has mostly dark green upperparts that contrast beautifully with its bright leg feathers.

This specific hummingbird species is native to the humid montane forests of South America, including Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They typically reside at high elevations along the Andes mountain range.

The "glowing" aspect refers to the bright, iridescent purple throat patch that shines brilliantly when the sunlight hits it. The "puffleg" portion of the name simply describes the characteristic fluffy white feathers covering its legs.

Like other hummingbirds, the Glowing puffleg feeds primarily on nectar from high-altitude flowering plants in the Andean cloud forests. They also catch small insects on the wing to provide essential protein for their diet.
