description Gonatus steenstrupi Overview
Gonatus steenstrupi is a gonatid squid of the boreal North Atlantic, with the type locality at Rockall west of the British Isles. It has a slender, conical mantle, a heart-shaped fin that extends beyond the mantle, and a tentacular club with one very large central hook plus smaller hooks. Adults occur mainly in the lower epipelagic and mesopelagic zones, sometimes reaching the surface at night, and can attain a mantle length of about 35 cm.
