Google Professional Data Engineer

While the exam focuses heavily on data pipelines and infrastructure, you are required to know how to deploy existing machine learning models using Google Cloud services like Vertex AI. Deep theoretical knowledge of ML algorithms isn't strictly required, but practical integration of ML APIs is tested.

The exam rigorously tests your ability to design, load, and query data within BigQuery, including understanding partitioning and clustering for cost optimization. You will need to know how to secure datasets and implement row-level access controls to pass.

The Associate Cloud Engineer covers broad, foundational Google Cloud infrastructure deployment, while the Professional Data Engineer dives much deeper into specific data tools like Dataflow, Dataproc, and BigQuery. The Data Engineer exam assumes you already know the basics of GCP networking and storage.

Google officially recommends having three or more years of industry experience, including at least one year designing and managing solutions using Google Cloud. Because it tests practical implementation scenarios, relying purely on theoretical knowledge without actual Dataflow or BigQuery experience is very difficult.
