Where exactly is Großer Knechtsand?
The sandbank lies in Lower Saxony's Wadden Sea, beyond the estuaries of the Weser and Elbe. It sits between Mellum to the southwest and Neuwerk to the northeast.
Does Großer Knechtsand remain above water at high tide?
Most of the surrounding flats are shaped and exposed by the tides, but the central Hoher Knechtsand is a high sand area that remains above normal high water. That central section covers roughly 2.6 square kilometers.
Why is Großer Knechtsand important for birds?
It is a major resting and moulting area for shelducks and also supports Sandwich terns and eider ducks. The area became a nature reserve in 1957 and is now within the protected zone of Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
Was Großer Knechtsand once used as a bombing range?
Yes. British forces used the area for bombing practice during the 1950s after exercises were moved away from Heligoland. Public concern about wildlife contributed to the military use ending when the agreement expired in 1957.
