Noorderhaaks

description Noorderhaaks Overview

The Noorderhaaks, also known as the Razende Bol, is an uninhabited shifting sandbank situated off the northern tip of Texel island in the Netherlands. It lies at the entrance to the Marsdiep, the tidal inlet separating Texel from the mainland province of North Holland. The sandbank's size and position continually change under the influence of tidal currents and North Sea wave action. It is part of the Wadden Sea coastal system and serves as a haul-out site for seals.

help Noorderhaaks FAQ

Where exactly is the Noorderhaaks sandbar located?

Noorderhaaks is an uninhabited, shifting sandbank located in the North Sea, just off the northern tip of Texel island in the Netherlands. It sits right at the western entrance to the Marsdiep tidal inlet, separating Texel from the mainland.

How was the Noorderhaaks sandbar formed?

The sandbar was naturally formed by the strong tidal currents of the Marsdiep pushing sediment into a sheltered area of the North Sea. Because it is an active sandbar, its exact shape, size, and position continuously shift depending on the sea currents and storms.

Can visitors find wildlife on the Noorderhaaks?

Despite being a barren, shifting sandbar, it is an important resting and breeding ground for seabirds and seals. Large populations of harbor seals and gray seals frequently haul out on the dry sand flats to rest, especially during low tide.

Can tourists walk or boat out to Noorderhaaks?

Tourists cannot freely walk to the sandbar, as it is completely surrounded by water and is protected to preserve the local seal populations. However, various boat tour operators from the nearby Texel harbor of Den Oever offer eco-tours that allow visitors to view the seals and the sandbar from the water.
