Hales Best Jumbo

It is an American heirloom muskmelon that produces oval-shaped fruits with heavily netted rinds and pronounced ribs. The interior reveals dense, sweet, orange flesh surrounding a central seed cavity. The fruits typically weigh between three and five pounds when mature.

The cultivar was developed from the Hales Best line during the 1920s by grower Hiram Hales in California. It quickly gained popularity as a reliable, drought-resistant variety for commercial growers and home gardeners. It became a standard shipping melon in the mid-20th century.

Like most muskmelons, a Hales Best Jumbo is ripe when the fruit easily "slips" from the vine with a gentle tug. The rind will also undergo a color shift from green to a golden or yellowish hue beneath the netting. Additionally, the blossom end should yield slightly to pressure and emit a sweet fragrance.

Hales Best Jumbo is technically a muskmelon, though in North America the terms "cantaloupe" and "muskmelon" are often used interchangeably. True cantaloupes (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis) have rough, scaly rinds, whereas muskmelons like Hales Best have the characteristic heavy netting. It belongs to the reticulatus group of melons.
