Han Dynasty

Papermaking is one of the Han Dynasty's most significant innovations. The court official Cai Lun refined the process around 105 CE using bark, hemp, and rags, creating a writing medium that would eventually transform communication across the world.

The Silk Road trade network was formally initiated under Emperor Wu (r. 141–87 BCE), who dispatched the diplomat Zhang Qian on missions to Central Asia to seek alliances against the Xiongnu nomads. These diplomatic expeditions opened overland trade routes connecting China to Central Asia, India, and eventually the Mediterranean world.

The Han Dynasty adopted Confucianism as its official state philosophy, replacing the harsh Legalism of the preceding Qin Dynasty. Emperor Wu established the Imperial University in 124 BCE to train officials in Confucian classics, creating an educational system that would shape Chinese governance for centuries.

The Han Dynasty's decline was driven by factional court politics, the corruption of eunuch factions, and major peasant uprisings such as the Yellow Turban Rebellion of 184 CE. The dynasty formally ended in 220 CE when the last emperor, Xian, abdicated, beginning the Three Kingdoms period immortalized in Chinese literature.
