description Hans Singer Overview
Hans Singer (1910–2006) was a German-British development economist who spent much of his career with the United Nations. He is best known for co-developing, with Raúl Prebisch, the Prebisch–Singer hypothesis, which holds that the terms of trade for primary commodity exporters tend to decline over time relative to manufactured goods. This argument underpinned structuralist and dependency approaches to development policy. Singer also contributed early work on employment, food aid, and technology transfer in low-income economies.
