Illy Classico Espresso

Illy Classico is technically classified as a medium-dark roast, meticulously crafted in Italy from 100% Arabica beans. It delivers a full-bodied, smooth flavor profile with distinct notes of chocolate and caramel rather than a bitter, charred taste.

While the Classico label applies to their signature blend, you must check the specific grind size on the can, as Illy sells versions specifically ground for espresso machines, moka pots, and drip coffee makers. Using the fine espresso grind in a standard drip machine can result in over-extraction and clogging.

A single shot of liquid Illy Classico espresso actually contains slightly less total caffeine than a standard 8-ounce cup of drip coffee. However, because the caffeine is concentrated in a much smaller volume of liquid, it often provides a quicker, more noticeable energy spike.

Illy pioneered the use of pressurized packaging in the 1930s to preserve the freshness of their coffee grounds. By replacing the oxygen in the can with an inert gas under pressure, the coffee retains its rich aroma and natural oils for much longer than standard paper bags.
