The Ilyushin Il-76, NATO reporting name 'Candid,' is a Soviet-designed four-engine turbofan strategic and tactical airlifter that first flew in 1971. Developed as a jet-powered replacement for the turboprop Antonov An-12, the Il-76 can operate from rough and unpaved airstrips while carrying heavy outsized cargo. It has been operated extensively by Russia, the Soviet Union, and numerous export customers for military transport, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief.
