Istiqlal Mosque

The Istiqlal Mosque is the national mosque of Indonesia, located in the capital city of Jakarta. It stands prominently near the Merdeka Square and the Jakarta Cathedral. It serves as a monumental place of large-scale communal prayer for the predominantly Muslim Indonesian population.

Constructed in 1978, the Istiqlal Mosque is Southeast Asia's largest mosque, accommodating up to 120,000 people. This massive capacity allows it to serve the huge crowds that gather for large-scale communal prayers. It is specifically designed to handle the massive influx of worshippers during major Islamic holidays.

The mosque was designed by the Indonesian architect Frederich Silaban, who won a national design competition for the project. His design features a distinct modernist style with minimal geometric elements and a spherical dome. Construction was completed in 1978 during the presidency of Suharto.

The word Istiqlal translates to Independence in Arabic, which is fitting as the mosque was built to commemorate Indonesian independence. The national mosque serves as a symbol of the country's freedom and its status as a sovereign nation. It stands as a place of remembrance and reflection for the Indonesian people.
