Jasminum nudiflorum

description Jasminum nudiflorum Overview

Jasminum nudiflorum, the winter jasmine, is a deciduous shrub in the olive family (Oleaceae) native to northern China. It is notable for producing solitary bright yellow flowers on bare green stems during winter and early spring, well before its leaves appear. Introduced to Europe by the Scottish plant hunter Robert Fortune in 1844, it grows to roughly 1–2 meters with slender, arching stems that root where they contact soil. Unlike true jasmine (Jasminum officinale), its flowers are unscented.

help Jasminum nudiflorum FAQ

Why does Jasminum nudiflorum flower before its leaves appear?

Winter jasmine forms flowers on the previous year's growth, opening bright yellow blooms on bare green stems in winter or early spring. Its species name, nudiflorum, refers to this "naked-flowered" appearance.

Does winter jasmine smell like common jasmine?

Jasminum nudiflorum is generally unscented, unlike the fragrant white flowers of Jasminum officinale. Gardeners grow it mainly for winter color rather than perfume.

When should Jasminum nudiflorum be pruned?

Prune it in spring immediately after flowering because the next display develops on the previous year's stems. The Royal Horticultural Society also notes that an overgrown plant can tolerate hard renovation pruning.

Is winter jasmine a true climbing plant?

It is a scrambling deciduous shrub, not a self-clinging climber, so its long stems need tying to a wall or trellis. Unsupported shoots can arch onto the ground and root where they touch soil.
