Jog Falls

Jog Falls is located on the Sharavati River in the Shimoga district of the state of Karnataka in southwestern India. It is nestled deep within the lush, green forests of the Western Ghats mountain range. It is one of the highest and most famous waterfalls in the country.

Unlike many waterfalls that flow as a single sheet, Jog Falls is distinctly segmented into four parallel cascades named Raja, Rani, Rover, and Rocket. The Raja is a continuous, unbroken stream, while the Rocket forcefully shoots downwards in dense volumes. The unique shapes give each section its own visual character.

Yes, it is recognized as a major plunge waterfall, meaning the water drops vertically without making continuous contact with the bedrock during its descent. It drops unobstructed from a height of around 253 meters (830 feet). The dramatic, sheer drop is what makes it such an impressive sight.

The best time to visit is during the monsoon season, typically between the months of July and October. During this time, the Linganamakki dam upstream releases heavy overflow, turning the falls into a roaring, massive spectacle. Visiting in the dry summer months will yield a much smaller trickle of water.
