description Kapuas River Overview
The Kapuas River is a major waterway located entirely within the province of West Kalimantan on the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo. Measuring approximately 1,143 kilometers in length, it is the longest river on the island and the longest in Indonesia. The river flows westward from the Kapuas Hulu mountain range and drains into the South China Sea near the city of Pontianak. Because dense rainforests and limited road infrastructure dominate the region, the Kapuas River serves as the primary highway for local transportation, commerce, and communication.
