description King Louis XVI Overview

Louis XVI was king of France from 1774 until the monarchy was suspended during the French Revolution in 1792. A Bourbon monarch and the husband of Marie Antoinette, he inherited a state facing severe financial and political problems, and attempts to manage those pressures contributed to the crisis that led to revolution. After the fall of the monarchy, he was tried by the National Convention for treason and executed by guillotine in Paris on 21 January 1793.
