description Kis-Balaton Overview
Kis-Balaton is a large artificial wetland and nature reserve located at the mouth of the Zala River in western Hungary. Constructed in the 1980s, the expansive system of ponds and marshes was engineered to filter agricultural nutrients and pollutants out of the river before they could flow into nearby Lake Balaton. Following its construction, the area rapidly evolved into an ecologically significant habitat, becoming a major nesting and breeding ground for diverse bird species.
