KOMPSAT-5

KOMPSAT-5, also known as Arirang-5, is a South Korean Earth observation satellite that provides high-resolution radar imagery using a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) payload. It is used for environmental monitoring, disaster management, and geographic mapping, and because it uses radar it can image the Earth's surface regardless of cloud cover or daylight.

KOMPSAT-5 was launched in 2013 by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). It was South Korea's first satellite equipped with a synthetic aperture radar system, marking a significant milestone in the country's Earth observation capabilities.

KOMPSAT-5 carries a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) as its primary payload, operating in the X-band. This radar system allows the satellite to capture high-resolution images of the Earth's surface in all weather conditions, unlike optical satellites that are limited by cloud cover.

KOMPSAT-5 is operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), South Korea's national space agency. KARI oversees the KOMPSAT (Korean Multi-purpose Satellite) program, which includes a series of both optical and radar Earth observation satellites designated Arirang-1 through Arirang-5 and beyond.
