The Kong Kingdom, also known as the Kong Empire or Wattara Empire, was a precolonial West African state centered on the city of Kong in present-day northeastern Côte d'Ivoire. Seku Watara established its ruling dynasty around 1710, after which Dyula merchant networks helped the state control regional trade routes; Kong also became a center of Islamic learning. Samori Touré attacked and burned the city in 1897, ending the kingdom's political independence and opening the way for French control of the area.
