description Lake Constance Overview

Lake Constance is a large freshwater lake in Central Europe at the northern foot of the Alps, bordered by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. It covers about 536 km² and is fed mainly by the Alpine Rhine, which also flows out of its western end and continues down the Rhine. The lake is divided into larger Obersee and smaller Untersee sections, serves as a drinking-water reservoir, and supports shipping, recreation, fishing, and tourism around towns such as Konstanz, Friedrichshafen, and Bregenz.
