Language Weaver

Language Weaver was spun out of the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute and commercialized statistical machine translation technology. It was acquired by SDL in 2010 and its technology became part of SDL's enterprise translation product line, which later was rebranded as RWS after RWS acquired SDL in 2021.

Language Weaver was one of the first companies to commercialize statistical machine translation (SMT), an approach that used parallel corpora and probabilistic models to translate between languages. This represented a major shift from earlier rule-based machine translation systems and became the dominant paradigm before the rise of neural machine translation.

The Language Weaver brand and technology were absorbed into SDL's product line and subsequently into RWS after the 2021 acquisition. The underlying SMT approach has largely been superseded by neural machine translation (NMT), though some legacy enterprise customers may still use or have transitioned from the original platform.

The company was co-founded by USC researchers Kevin Knight and Daniel Marcu, who were leading figures in statistical machine translation research. Their academic work on SMT algorithms at USC's Information Sciences Institute formed the technical foundation of the company.
