Lapis lazuli is an opaque blue metamorphic rock rather than a single mineral. It is an aggregate dominated by lazurite, with calcite and pyrite commonly present; lazurite gives the material its blue color, while pyrite can appear as metallic flecks. The Sar-e-Sang deposits in Badakhshan, Afghanistan, were an important historical source, and powdered lapis was used to make the blue pigment ultramarine, especially in Renaissance painting. It is used for beads, cabochons, inlays, and carved objects.
