description Lapita culture Overview
The Lapita culture was an archaeological culture of the western Pacific associated with early Austronesian-speaking seafarers. Its most recognizable material remains are decorated earthenware vessels, often marked with dentate-stamped geometric designs. Between about 1500 and 500 BCE, Lapita communities moved eastward from the Bismarck Archipelago through the islands of Remote Oceania, including parts of Melanesia, Micronesia, and western Polynesia.
