The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dryobates minor) is a small member of the woodpecker family found across parts of the Palearctic, including Europe. Carl Linnaeus described it in 1758, and it is the smallest European woodpecker. Its black-and-white plumage has narrow white bars rather than the large patches of the Great Spotted Woodpecker, while males have a red crown.
